Onshore Wind

SgurrEnergy has been involved with numerous large scale wind energy developments around the world.

Whitelee, Europe’s largest wind farm development

SgurrEnergy has been working with ScottishPower, the biggest operator and developer of onshore wind energy in the UK on the development of Europe’s largest wind farm. The site covers an area of 55km2 on Eaglesham Moor, 10 miles south of Glasgow. It will comprise of approximately 140 turbines capable of generating up to 322MW. We have been working on this milestone project from its inception in 2002.

Our role:

  • Technical consultant
  • Wind monitoring – installation & management of 4 x 50m monitoring masts
  • Layout optimisation – to maximise energy yield while minimising environmental effects.
  • Wind regime & turbine suitability assessment
  • Noise assessment – developing a sophisticated method for modelling over large areas.
  • Energy yield prediction – developing new methods of modelling forested area
  • Turbine technology assessment
  • Power performance assessment

Black Law wind farm, one of the UK’s largest operational projects

This ScottishPower owned project site was the location of the first 70m guyed masts for wind measurements in Britain in mid 2003. The installation was project managed by SgurrEnergy. Using the data collected from these masts SgurrEnergy took responsibility for wind farm layout design, energy yield prediction and key elements of the framework agreement contract under which the 143MW wind farm is being constructed.

SgurrEnergy is currently undertaking power performance tests on two Bonus (Siemens) 2.3MW turbines and providing technical support with regard to the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system during the ongoing commissioning phase.

Forestry Commission Wales wind farm tender process 800MW

SgurrEnergy managed the tender process for capacity on 7 sites. We were retained as technical advisors and proceeded to design the technical section of the invitation to tender document. We were responsible for the technical assessment of all tender submissions.

Braes of Doune wind farm, milestone project for the UK

SgurrEnergy are the technical advisors for the wind turbines, mechanical, SCADA and communication systems for this 72MW wind farm developed by Airtricity in Stirlingshire, Scotland. SgurrEnergy are very proud to have supported this wind farm as it marks a milestone for the UK as becomes the 7th country in the world to install 2000MW of wind energy. The UK took 14 years to reach the 1000MW barrier but has reached the 2000MW barrier in less than an additional two years. With over 800MW now under construction in the UK hitting the 3000 MW milestone may be even quicker than two years. SgurrEnergy is pleased to continue to support the UK industry in achieving this goal with our high quality and highly responsive approach to delivering consultancy services. Ongoing technical advice is being provided for this project which came online in February 2007.

China wind energy development 4000MW

This project encompasses multiple sites in Inner Mongolia. SgurrEnergy carried out the following:

  • Wind resource mapping for regional wind farm development plans.
  • Technical due diligence for wind developer IPO.
  • Issue design specifications & supervise contractors for site investigation works.
  • Energy yield & detailed wind farm designs for large arrays.
  • Due diligence on wind turbine suppliers & sub-contractors.

Philippine wind energy development

SgurrEnergy worked on multiple sites totalling 450MW throughout the Philippines. This work involved the pre-monitoring of selection of wind farm sites using NCAR re-analysis data. Field surveys were carried out for preliminary wind farm boundaries and layouts. Technical presentations were given to government officials for sites permitting. Design, procurement and commissioning of wind monitoring stations to IEC/Measnet standards. We carried out energy yield prediction and a technology assessment of the turbines selecting the best option for the site conditions. We also provided detailed wind farm designs for the client.

Minsca Wind Farm

SgurrEnergy are the technical advisors for the turbines, mechanical, SCADA and communication systems for this 42.5MW wind farm near Lockerbie, Scotland on behalf of Airtricity.

Beinn an Tuirc Wind Farm

SgurrEnergy provided various consultancy services to ScottishPower throughout the construction and ongoing operation of this 30MW wind farm based in Argyll & Bute, including conducting the full Power Performance Assessment. This wind farm has been operational since December 2001.

Beinn Tharsuinn Wind Farm

SgurrEnergy are conducting the full Power Performance Assessment at Beinn Tharsuinn wind farm on behalf of ScottishPower. We are also the technical advisors for the turbines, SCADA and communication systems in this 30MW wind farm situated in the Highlands of Scotland. This wind farm has been operational since September 2006.
